Residents are being invited to discuss proposals for a new footbridge which will replace a level crossing in Wareham.

The Network Rail and South West Trains Alliance is proposing to build a fully accessible bridge over the railway near Wareham station between Sandford Lane and Sandford Road. The bridge will replace the existing footpath crossing which would be closed.

Two public events will take place providing an opportunity for local people to discuss the proposals before a formal planning application is submitted.

A spokesman for the Network Rail and South West Trains Alliance said: “The surest way to improve safety at a level crossing is to close it. A bridge in this location would allow us to remove a crossing which has a history of misuse and near misses.

“This is an opportunity for crossing users and residents to provide feedback on our proposals. Comments from these sessions, and the two previous public events held to discuss the bridge, will help shape the final design which will then be submitted as part of a formal planning application.”

The events take place at Wareham Town Hall on Tuesday 14 May between 2pm and 8pm and at Carey Hall, Wareham, on Monday 20 May, between 2pm and 8pm.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
