HATFIELD CHARGES STATEMENT

Region & Route:
National
Iain Brown, Company Solicitor said: “I can confirm that Nicholas Pollard, Alistair Cook, Sean Fugill and Keith Lea have today appeared before magistrates having been charged by the Crown with manslaughter and offences under health and safety legislation.  Chris Leah also appeared having been charged with an offence under the Health and Safety at Work Act, Section 37. As a consequence of its acquisition of Railtrack Plc, Network Rail also appeared having been charged with corporate manslaughter and health and safety offences. The matter has now been referred to the Crown Court. Both the company and the individuals fully intend to defend themselves against these charges. Network Rail will continue to provide full support to our employees and their families during this difficult time. The Hatfield crash was a tragic accident that affected a great many lives.  Unfortunately, we cannot turn back the clock. Despite the painful and difficult experiences of recent years the industry must move on and Network Rail’s task is to maintain the network in order to deliver a safe, reliable and efficient railway.”

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
