The Victorian footbridge at Hampden Park railway station in East Sussex has reopened after a three month refurbishment.

This work will extend the life of the footbridge and provide a safe and aesthetically pleasing footbridge for passengers to use at the station for many years to come.

Network Rail contractors replaced the stairs and decking with new, more durable materials offering improved slip resistance and a design life of up to 25 years.

Strengthening work was carried out to ensure the bridge can safely accommodate expected passenger use, while new handrails and safety mesh were installed to improve safety and prevent objects from falling onto the tracks below.

The central span of the bridge was removed in February and refurbished off-site to  maintain the integrity of the bridge and that we preserve the historic nature of the structure. It also allowed train services to continue operating throughout the project.

Accessibility improvements were also made at the station including new tactile paving at the top of the footbridge and on the platforms, supporting customers with visual impairments to navigate the station more confidently.

Southern Rail Head of Stations Tom Easdown said: “We’re delighted the footbridge at Hampden Park is open again and fully refurbished. I’d like to thank our passengers for bearing with us.”

Tim Leighton, Sussex Route Infrastructure Director for Network Rail, said: “The bridge at Hampden Park needed significant strengthening and refurbishment to keep it safe for years to come. It was a complex operation involving lifting the structure out by crane and transporting it by road for specialist work. I’d like to thank passengers for their patience while this vital work was completed.”

The refurbishment addressed the existing paint system, which had reached the end of its working life. It was fully renewed with a modern protective coating designed to helping to protect the steel structure from weather damage and reduce the need for future repairs.

The refurbished footbridge has now reopened and is fully available for customer use.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
