Greener future for Morpeth rail base thanks to £3.7m upgrade

Network Rail has upgraded its Morpeth maintenance delivery unit (MDU) with a £3.7 million investment to strengthen support for the railway in North East England.

The purpose of an MDU is to provide a physical base for maintenance teams who look after the rail network.

A complete refurbishment was carried out over seven months to transform an ageing building into an environmentally sustainable, high-spec workspace to support Network Rail teams carrying out rail improvements across the North East.

The upgraded site features a double-storey building with 22 modules, providing a comprehensive suite of facilities. These include depot office and meeting spaces, a large canteen, locker rooms, toilets, showers and flexible working areas.

Refurbishing an existing asset rather than constructing a new building has resulted in a significant saving in use of materials, waste generated and carbon emissions.

Energy-efficient technologies were a strong consideration, with the MDU now featuring triple-glazed windows and enhanced insulation; heat pump water heating systems; daylight-responsive lighting controls; and roof-mounted solar panels.

Additional external improvements include electric vehicle charging points, upgraded site lighting, a new car park, and a biodiversity net gain garden area to support environmental enhancement.

The work, carried out by Wernick Refurbished Buildings, was carefully planned in phases to keep the premises open as normal throughout, minimising any disruption on day-to-day railway operations.

Danny Phillips, Network Rail lead portfolio manager, said:

“We’re absolutely delighted with the huge improvements delivered at our MDU at Morpeth. Network Rail’s vision for the future is a simpler, better greener railway, the new facilities are a significant step in that direction and really appreciated by our teams.

“The project has demonstrated how modern refurbishment can deliver high-quality, future-ready infrastructure in a cost-effective and environmentally responsible way.

The project also delivered significant benefits for the local community. As part of the project’s social value commitment, three refurbished cabins were donated to local organisations including a Scouts group and cricket club.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
