Glasgow Central tour guide to take part in Commonwealth Games closing ceremony

A Glasgow Central Station tour guide, who helped welcome athletes in the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony, is getting ready for another proud moment this weekend after being selected to carry the United Republic of Tanzania flag at the closing ceremony.   

Sinead Fielding, a familiar face on the station’s popular tours, volunteered as a host for the Tanzania team during the opening ceremony, supporting the athletes behind the scenes as they prepared to walk out in front of thousands at the Hydro.  

Having helped guide the team through the opening event, Sinead will represent Tanzania once again at Sunday’s closing ceremony as the team’s flag bearer.   

She said: “To have the chance to take part in both the opening and closing ceremonies is such a privilege and something I’ll never forget. As a tour guide at Glasgow Central, I meet people from all over the world every week, but the Commonwealth Games has meant I’ve met people from even more countries and cultures. Glasgow has done a fantastic job of welcoming them and I’m really proud to have played my part.”    

Sinead is one of several Network Rail staff helping make the Commonwealth Games a success. Project planner, Ann Gardiner, also stepped into the spotlight as a dancer in the opening ceremony, while many others have volunteered their time across the city, supporting spectators and events.   

Ross Moran, route director at Network Rail, added: “We've got people from all walks of life working across Scotland's railway and, as we've seen over the past week or so, many of them have talents that go far beyond the day job. It's been great to see so many staff getting involved, both behind the scenes and in the ceremonies. We're really proud of them and know there will be plenty of people across Network Rail cheering on Sinead and the Tanzania team at the closing ceremony on Sunday."  

Scotland’s Railway has played a key role in supporting the Commonwealth Games, with all four competition venues, including the closing ceremony at the Hydro, accessible by train. Throughout the Games, ScotRail added more than 1,400 extra carriages to services, providing additional seats on key routes. Network Rail Games Ambassadors have also been on hand at Glasgow Central to help spectators travel to and from events.   

Anyone travelling to the remaining events are encouraged to plan ahead, allow extra time for their journey, and check the latest travel information before setting off.
