Glasgow Central is platform for foodbank collection

Glasgow Central station will host a foodbank collection on Wednesday November 28 in support of the city’s South East and South West foodbanks.

The collection, organised in tandem with the British Transport Police, is asking for donations of tinned food, tea or coffee, diluting juices and toiletries that will go towards families in crisis at what is for many, a difficult time of year.

Network Rail staff, BTP and volunteers will be accepting donations ‘under the clock’ on Glasgow Central station concourse from 7am-7pm on Wednesday November 28 and anyone using the station on that day is being asked to bring what they can.

The foodbanks in the south of the city are part of the Trussell Trust network of foodbanks across the country and will use the donations try to keep a surplus of food sitting as a back-up.

They have been short on supplies since the summer, with all items being donated to the foodbank heading straight back out. The foodbank is also preparing for a potential increase in the demand for the service as the festive season approaches.

Susan Holden, Glasgow Central station manager said: “The station has been at the heart of the city since it opened and has always stood ready to play a role in supporting Glaswegians in times of challenge and crisis. This is why we were proud to be asked to host this collection and are working hard with the British Transport Police to make it happen.

“We know the people of Glasgow; their pride in the city and their generosity, and we are confident that they will step up and support the collection in whatever way they can.

“Every donation will be gratefully received and warmly welcomed and put to good use supporting our fellow citizens who need a little extra help at this time of year.”
