Network Rail has launched a new national recruitment drive, focussing on maintenance roles. There are a variety of positions open to entry level candidates, from Operative and Technician, right through to Team Leader.
Whether ensuring tracks and wider rail infrastructure are in good safe working condition, or carrying out complex diagnostics to monitor system performance, maintenance specialists are essential to delivering a safe and reliable railway network in Britain. This includes over 20,000 miles of track and thousands of signals, levels crossing and bridges.
Darren Roberts is a team leader on the Western route and knows first-hand the vital role these professionals play, working behind the scenes to keep passengers and freight on the move.
Darren says: “Growing up I was active all the time and that passion was the driving force that put me where I am today. The type of work we do is very hands on and dynamic and can include anything from vegetation management to level crossing maintenance. No two days are the same and with the right attitude you can really grow with the job.”
Network Rail’s maintenance recruitment drive is part of the wider industry celebrations for Railway 200. This year-long nationwide partnership-led campaign celebrates 200 years of the modern railway and aims to inspire people to think about a career in rail and become the pioneers of tomorrow.
Martin Thyne, HR Director, Network Rail said: “In this important bicentenary year, marking the birth of the modern railway, we are delighted to launch a new recruitment drive for maintenance roles. Rail maintenance offers a variety of career pathways. We believe in the power of potential and through these entry level opportunities you can develop and take your career to the next level.”

About Network Rail
We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.
Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
