£7m access improvements for East Kilbride line

Passengers travelling by train between East Kilbride and Glasgow are now benefitting from a £7m package of access improvements, with new lifts at Giffnock station going live. 

The newly commissioned lifts at Giffnock, along with those already in use at the new Hairmyres station, make it easier for passengers to reach platforms - particularly those with mobility challenges, luggage, or prams. Similar improvements are planned for East Kilbride station after it opens next month. 

The upgrades are part of the £144m East Kilbride enhancement project. Funded by the Scottish Government, it aims to decarbonise the line and deliver more reliable rail services. 

Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Fiona Hyslop said: “It’s been fantastic to see the progress along the route of the East Kilbride line over the many visits I have made. I am particularly impressed with the way various elements of the project have been progressed concurrently, reducing the potential impact on passengers and residents alike. 

“The improved accessibility this project will bring will make rail more attractive, and the latest lifts to open will be welcome news for those travelling to and from Giffnock station.” 

Paul Reilly, senior programme manager at Network Rail Scotland added: “Everyone deserves to feel safe, supported and confident when travelling by train. These upgrades may seem like small changes, but they can have a big impact, especially for those who previously faced barriers when travelling. 

“By improving access at stations, we’re helping people stay connected to work, education, and their communities. It’s a significant step towards a more inclusive and welcoming railway for everyone."

Phil Campbell, ScotRail Customer Operations Director, said: “We are committed to making Scotland’s Railway accessible for all, so it’s fantastic to see the work to improve access at Giffnock and Hairmyres complete and the new lifts ready for use. 

“The improved access will make a real difference to the daily lives of many of our customers, enabling easier, and more comfortable journeys.” 

The East Kilbride enhancement project continues to progress. Several upgrades have already been completed along the route, including the opening of a new £16m station at Hairmyres in May, new footbridges at Busby, Clarkston, and Giffnock stations, the renewal of the railway bridge in Busby, and the installation of a new road bridge on Thornliebank Road. Electric trains are expected to be running on the route by the end of the year.
