£1m project to help future-proof Stranraer railway line

Region & Route:
Scotland’s Railway: Scotland

More than £1m is being invested in the Stranraer railway line this month as Network Rail carries out essential improvements aimed at delivering more reliable journeys for passengers.

Between 28 November and 8 December, teams will carry out vital drainage upgrades along key sections of track, using over 2,000 tonnes of materials to help prevent flooding and keep services running reliably. Markdh No.1 Level Crossing will also be upgraded, and structures and embankments will be inspected.

The project is part of Network Rail’s commitment to improving the long-term resilience and reliability of the route, helping ensure it remains a trusted transport connection for the south west.

Ross Moran, route director at Network Rail Scotland, said: “We’re investing in essential improvements to help keep this route reliable for the communities that depend on it. Strengthening drainage and inspecting key assets will help make the line more resilient to Scotland’s challenging weather, ensuring services can continue to run smoothly.

"We know this work means short term changes to journeys, and we apologise for any inconvenience it will cause. Our teams will be working hard to complete the upgrades as quickly and safely as possible, and we appreciate passengers’ patience while we deliver this important project."

Buses will replace trains between Ayr and Stranraer from the end of service on Friday 28 November until the start of service on Monday 8 December. There will also be rail replacement buses between Kilwinning and Ayr on Sunday 30 November.

Mark Ilderton, ScotRail Service Delivery Director, said: “ScotRail is committed to keeping customers moving while Network Rail completes this essential work between Ayr and Stranraer.

"A robust rail replacement plan will be in place to ensure people can continue to travel reliably throughout the works.

“We’ll provide clear, up-to-date information to help customers plan their journeys and travel with confidence, and we’re grateful for their patience and understanding while these important improvements are carried out.”

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
