FULL SERVICES RESUME AS RAIL FLOODING EASES

Region & Route:
Scotland’s Railway: Scotland

Network Rail statement – 1400hrs, 8 August 2008

Rail services in Scotland returned to normal from 1300hrs today following the easing of flooding in Edinburgh’s Princes’ Street Gardens area.

Many services had been reinstated by 0800hrs this morning but the full timetable could not be resumed until the Haymarket tunnel became fully operational.

David Simpson, Route Director for Network Rail in Scotland commented:

“The last 36 hours have been an extremely testing time for rail passengers and the whole team in Edinburgh. We had almost a month’s rainfall in less than 48 hours and our pumps in the Princes’ Street Gardens area were overwhelmed by the volume of water, leading to a loss of signalling through Haymarket Tunnel.

“I’d like to apologise to passengers for the delays, cancellations and overcrowding which occurred as a result of this flooding. We will be reviewing the procedures we have in place to deal with such severe weather and will implement whatever measures are necessary to reduce the risk of this type of incident occurring again.”

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
