FREE SUMMER EVENTS TO KEEP KIDS OFF THE TRACKS

Region & Route:
National

A series of free activity-filled summer events designed to engage young people in new and exciting activities and steer them away from the dangers of the railway, have been announced today by Network Rail's No Messin'! Campaign.

Thousands of young people in Leeds, Alloa, Southampton, Coventry, Manchester and Weston-super-mare will be able to participate in a wealth of sports, dance and music activities including rock climbing, DJ-ing, professional football coaching, kick boxing, motor biking, a surfing simulator and wrestling. Last year more than 14,000 young people took part in activities across the country.

Dozens of people are killed or seriously injured on the railway every year by mucking about on the tracks. The locations for the ‘No Messin’ Live! events’ have been chosen as they are all hotspots for railway crime.*

Dates of the events:

23-24 July: Alloa, Scotland

31 July – 1 August: Leeds

1-2 August: Southampton

6-7 August: Coventry

13-14 August: Moston, Manchester

29-30 August: Weston-super-mare

More information on the events including exact locations and times etc will be announced later this year.

*Alloa has been chosen as it will see the new Stirling-Alloa-Kincardine railway line open in the town in Spring 2008.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
