FLOODING ON THE COTSWOLD LINE – SERVICE UPDATE

Region & Route:
| Wales & Western: Wales & Borders
| Wales & Western

Hundreds of Network Rail engineers will be working around the clock to repair the damage to the Cotswold Line between Oxford and Worcester which has been hit by the unprecedented flooding in the region. Services are not expected to resume for a least two weeks as engineers remove debris and start the huge task of rebuilding the railway. Embankments and cuttings which have been washed away will be rebuilt, damaged bridges repaired and track and signalling systems replaced before the railway can reopen safely.
John Gill, Network Rail Area General Manager for the West Country said: "I want to thank passengers and train operating companies for their patience during these very difficult circumstances. The water has caused extensive damage at more than 20 sites in the area around Evesham and Moreton-in-Marsh. The first challenge has been to get our engineers and heavy plant to site due to the local road conditions and waterlogged ground. We will now be working around the clock to restore services as quickly as possible, but as ever - safety has to remain our number one priority." A spokesperson for First Great Western added: "We regret the considerable disruption that this unprecedented flooding is causing to our services and we are working closely with Network Rail to get the line re-opened and services running again. Customers can get the latest information from www.firstgreatwestern.co.uk , or by phoning National Rail Enquiries on 08457 484950."

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
