The final phase of work to complete the GBP100million signalling upgrade in the Portsmouth area begins next week. Work to bring the new signalling system into operation will take place between Wednesday 24 October and Sunday 28 October, after which services will return to normal and the enhanced system will start to deliver a better, more reliable train service. Next week’s final testing represents the last stage of the major overhaul of the signalling system along a 50 mile section of the rail network in the Portsmouth area. Network Rail Route Director David Pape said: “Previous issues that delayed this important and complex project have been resolved and we are now fully focussed on carrying out the final testing in order to finish the job and allow passengers to experience the full benefits of this scheme.” A summary of line closures taking place during this period of work is as follows: Wednesday 24 October

Traffic control measures and closures will be implemented at these locations. The following level crossings will be affected by closures:
  • Bedhampton Level Crossing: Closed from 0800 on 27th October to 0245 on 3rd November

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
