FILTON ABBEY WOOD RE-OPENS

Region & Route:
| Wales & Western: Wales & Borders
| Wales & Western
Filton Abbey Wood Station has re-opened following a £15 million scheme to double the track and create a new platform, removing a major bottleneck on the rail network. Previously, Filton Abbey Wood Station was a significant bottleneck on the network as trains had to wait outside until a platform became available. The project, which was jointly funded by the Strategic Rail Authority and Network Rail, the track will be doubled and a new platform built alongside existing platforms at the station. Existing track and points will also be renewed.  From Monday June 14 to Monday June 28, the main Bristol to South Wales line will be closed at Filton, and rail traffic diverted over a secondary route between Filton West junction and Narroways Hill junction, via (but not calling at) St Andrew’s Road, Avonmouth, Shirehampton, Sea Mills, Clifton Down, and Redland. Network Rail has written to residents in this area to warn them about the extra rail traffic they will notice over this two-week period. There are many road and pedestrian crossings along this route and road-users and residents in the area are all being asked to be extra vigilant when they cross the line, due to the increase in the volume of train traffic.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
