Essential work for Glasgow Queen Street station

Network Rail is carrying out essential work at Glasgow Queen Street from today (June 1) to increase the space available for passengers and the public at the station.

For the next two weeks, a small number of staff will be on-site completing surfacing work in what will be the public areas outside the station, on Dundas and West George streets.

The works are being carried out to increase the circulation space for customers and improve physical distancing.

The works have been fully risk-assessed in line with public health guidelines and staff will be wearing PPE at all times.

The main construction works at Queen Street remain paused as part of the wider lockdown strategy and are not recommencing at this time.

The project team is currently reviewing the programme for completing the redevelopment and Network Rail will confirm a revised completion date once the lockdown on construction sites is lifted. 

Network Rail is working closely with Transport Scotland, ScotRail and Glasgow City Council to complete these works as quickly as possible for passengers and to help keep the public safe while using Scotland’s Railway. 

Tommy McPake, Network Rail programme manager for Queen Street, said: “The work we are undertaking will help to create more space for the public outside Queen Street in anticipation of an increase in passenger flows when we start to ease out of lockdown.

“We have carefully assessed the activities we are carrying out and will have only a small number of staff on-site while we deliver this essential work.

“We would ask the public to maintain a safe two-metre distance from staff working on site and remind people that they should only be travelling by train for essential journeys.”
