- Region & Route:
- Eastern: Anglia
Network Rail teams will be carrying out essential maintenance on the Essex Thameside line over several weekends in January and February 2026. These works are aimed at keeping the railway safe, reliable, and comfortable for passengers.
Passengers planning to use c2c services during specific weekends in January and February are being encouraged to check before they travel and to leave extra time to complete their journeys.
Engineering work will take place on weekends along the Essex Thameside line, including significant maintenance of the railway and stations:
- Preparatory work at Chalkwell and Southend East stations ahead of new lifts being installed to improve accessibility for all passengers.

- Track maintenance between Leigh-on-Sea and Shoeburyness to make journeys smoother and safer.
- Re-railing at multiple locations to maintain track stability and reduce delays.
Simon Milburn, Network Rail Anglia infrastructure director said:
"These works will deliver a range of vital improvements from station upgrades to infrastructure maintenance, but I know this will cause some disruption for passengers, so I'd like to thank everyone for their understanding and patience as we carry out these essential improvements to improve services across Essex Thameside."

About Network Rail
We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.
Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
