Essential repairs planned for bridge at Langbank Station

Region & Route:
Scotland’s Railway: Scotland

Network Rail will soon begin vital work to repair a railway bridge at Langbank station and renew part of the platform connected to it.

The £652,000 project will help maintain the safety and reliability of the railway for passengers and freight, as well as the road that runs beneath the bridge.

The work involves masonry and steelwork repairs to the underbridge as well as replacing a section of the platform. Routine maintenance work will also take place.

To allow the project to be delivered safely and efficiently:

  • Station Road will be closed from 19 January until 13 March. Renfrewshire Council has agreed a diversion with traffic management between Douglas Avenue and Old Greenock Road.
  • Langbank station will be closed over two weekends: 7-9 February and 14-16 February, with changes to train services on these dates between Glasgow Central and Gourock/Wemyss Bay.

Bus replacement services will be available between Paisley Gilmour Street and Wemyss / Gourock. Some early morning and late-night buses will run between Glasgow Central and Wemyss / Gourock.

Passengers are advised to plan ahead and check their journey before travelling. Local residents will also receive full details of the road diversion in advance.

Andy McManus, project manager at Network Rail, said: “This work is vital to ensure the continued safety and reliability of the railway at Langbank and across the wider Inverclyde route.

“By carrying out the most disruptive work during two blockades, we can keep the impact on passengers and communities to a minimum while continuing other upgrades over a longer period”.

Mark Ilderton, ScotRail Service Delivery Director, said: “When Network Rail carries out these essential repairs to the railway bridge at Langbank, our focus will be on helping our customers travel with confidence.

“We have a robust rail replacement plan in place so customers can continue to make their journeys during the works. We know this will mean some changes for customers and the local community, and we thank everyone for their patience and understanding.

“Once complete, this investment will help deliver a safer and more reliable railway for years to come.”

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
