Engineers working to fix signalling fault at Edinburgh Waverley

Region & Route:
Scotland’s Railway: Scotland

Passengers are being advised that disruption to rail services to and from Edinburgh Waverley will continue into Friday morning as engineers work to restore signalling systems around the station.

Significant disruption has been caused to rail services on Thursday evening after a power surge caused signals to stop working in the Edinburgh area.

Network Rail engineers are on-site working hard to identify the fault, restore signalling and get trains back on the move.

The complex nature of the fault means trains won’t run to or from Edinburgh Waverley for the rest of today (Thursday 2 November).

Disruption will continue to affect services tomorrow morning as trains will not be able to move into position overnight tonight for start of service on Friday.

Passengers are being urged to check with their train operator or www.nationalrail.co.uk before they travel tomorrow morning to see if their service is affected.

Train operators affected (ScotRail, London North Eastern Railway, TransPennine Express, CrossCountry, Lumo, Avanti West Coast and Caledonian Sleeper) are working to keep passengers on the move, though rail replacement transport is limited.

Liam Sumpter, Network Rail Scotland route director, said: “Our engineers are working as fast as they can to fix the fault with the signalling system at Edinburgh Waverley and get train services back on the move.

“The complex nature of our signalling systems means identifying and repairing faults can be a difficult process and we are sorry for the disruption caused to our customers.

“We’d urge passengers travelling on Friday morning to check with National Rail Enquiries or their train operator before they set off for the latest information.”

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
