Engineers complete £1m Paisley Road bridge renovation

Network Rail engineers have completed the three-month-long, £1m renovation of the rail bridge at Barrhead station on time for passengers and road users.

The steelwork on the bridge, located on Paisley Road, was beginning to degrade and needed to undergo vital renovations to ensure a safe and reliable rail service through Barrhead.

Paisley Road was closed to vehicles at the station from February 1 to May 6 while engineers worked on the structure – reopening two days ahead of the planned date of Monday, May 9.

During the closure, engineers grit-blasted old paint and rust off the steelwork to expose the metal below before repairing and strengthening the metalwork and repainting the entire structure.

Jeremy Spence, Network Rail project manager for the renovation works, said: “The work we were undertaking was vital to the long-term operation of the railway. We understand the inconvenience the work caused to motorists and some residents and we thank them for their patience throughout this project.”
