EASTER IMPROVEMENT PROGRAMME IN SCOTLAND

Region & Route:
Scotland’s Railway: Scotland
Network Rail will invest more than £75m in Britain’s rail infrastructure this Easter weekend as it works to create an ever more reliable, better performing railway, and further improve services for passengers. Over 5,000 engineers will work round-the-clock to deliver a programme of improvements across the country, installing new signalling and points and laying miles of new track and ballast. In Scotland, track renewals will be carried out between Lochwinnoch, in Renfrewshire, and Glengarnock, in Ayrshire, on Easter Sunday (March 23) and at Larbert, Stirlingshire, on Saturday March 22 and Sunday March 23. The renewal works, which will improve the quality of the track and mean smoother journeys for passengers, will require bus replacement services to operate while engineers are on site. The Lochwinnoch-Glengarnock works will result in buses replacing rail services between Johnstone and Irvine calling at Milliken Park, Howwood, Lochwinnoch, Glengarnock and Dalry, while alternative train services to and from the Ayrshire coast via Kilmarnock will also be in operation. Services between Glasgow and Stirling, Perth, Aberdeen and Inverness and between Edinburgh and Dunblane will be affected over the Easter weekend (Saturday 22 March to Monday 24 March) because of the track renewals and work on Transport Scotland’s Stirling-Alloa-Kincardine rail line. Normal train services will resume through Stirling on Tuesday, March 25. David Simpson, Network Rail Route Director for Scotland, said: “This investment and maintenance programme is essential to ensuring the continued running of a reliable rail network in Scotland and carrying out these works during holidays and at weekends will allow us to complete them quickly and efficiently. “All our activity has been timed to ensure it causes the minimum of disruption to commuters and to take full advantage of reduced passenger numbers during holiday periods.”
Network Rail is working closely with train operators, Passenger Focus and other partners in the rail industry to get up-to-date information to passengers before they travel. Travel information for Easter is available from National Rail Enquiries.
Steve Montgomery, First ScotRail's Operations and Safety Director, added: “These works will involve a high number of replacement buses, and some will leave earlier than train times. We have done everything possible to keep inconvenience to an absolute minimum. Clearly, some journeys will take longer than normal and passengers should allow more time for travel.” For advice on journeys and ticket information, passengers can also contact National Rail Enquiries at: http://www.nationalrail.co.uk or on 0845 7484950. About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
