Dumfries station bridge plans submitted

Region & Route:
Scotland’s Railway: Scotland

Network Rail has applied for listed building consent to make the station easier to access for passengers.

The application for listed building consent was made to Dumfries and Galloway Council and, if approved, will see the construction of a new footbridge with lifts to allow step-free access across both platforms.

Dumfries residents were given a first look at the plans during a community event in the town earlier this month, where it was revealed that the construction of the new bridge is expected to be completed in 2024.

Dumfries station is a category B listed building and the designs have been developed to be sympathetic to the look and feel of the historic character of the station.

Karen McChesney, Network Rail’s town planning lead for the accessibility work at Dumfries station said: “The level of interest in the new bridge at Dumfries station was great. We are grateful that the people of Dumfries took the time to come and see what we are proposing.

“After working with our architects and local stakeholders, we’re confident that we’ve made good choices on the proposed design that is being put forward for listed building consent.

“All being well, we are hopeful of progressing the work in Dumfries in autumn this year.”

For anyone who was unable to make it along to the event but would still like to see the proposed design, they can find everything they need to know on Scotland’s Railway website www.scotlandsrailway.com/projects by searching Dumfries Access for All.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
