CONTRACT AWARDED FOR NEWPORT STATION SCHEME

A revamped station for Newport got closer today with the appointment by Network Rail of Galliford Try Rail to undertake the refurbishment work at station.

Jointly funded by Network Rail and the Welsh Assembly Government, the improvement scheme sets to modernise and upgrade the station facilities as part of a city-wide vision to rejuvenate Newport. By 2010, passengers will get to benefit from a fit-for-purpose station environment with improved public and passenger amenities, including disabled access, and more car park spaces.

The £13m contract will include, construction of two brand new termini (using a special type of plastic also used by Eden Project), building new car parking spaces and the installation of new waiting facilities.

Construction work will begin this summer once detailed design and delivery plan is completed.

Mike Gallop, route enhancement manager for Network Rail, said: “We want a modernised station to reflect Newport as a vibrant, dynamic city, which is the ‘Gateway to Wales’. We are thankful of the tremendous support from the Welsh Assembly Government and Arriva Train Wales to help drive this much-need investment for city and Wales. There is still much work to be done and we will continue to work hard to bring the project forward to the next vital phase.”

The delivery of the scheme is project managed by Network Rail.
