COMMUNITY LIAISON GROUP OPEN LINES OF COMMUNICATION

Region & Route:
| Southern
Network Rail last night attended the inaugural Whitemoor Community Liaison Group.  The 23 strong-group was chaired by Cllr Yeulett and attended by local residents, town councillors, wildlife group, Fenland District Council and County Council representatives. Peter Heubeck, Network Rail Project Director said:  “Network Rail wants to be a good and considerate neighbour, now – during construction, and when the site opens in April.  This group was set up at our suggestion through the planning application process and I feel that it has been and will continue to be worthwhile.  Naturally a number of issues have been raised and we will take them away to see what can be practically achieved.” Issues raised on the night included: ·        The amount of lighting which will be installed on the site ·        A considerate contractors code of conduct ·        Monitoring road surface conditions on routes into site ·        Ensuring track greasers installed as soon as possible ·        Confirmation that bund construction has started Cllr Yeulett said:  “The meeting went very well and I was particularly pleased to see residents attending, given earlier press speculation of a boycott. The residents raised their concerns in a constructive way, their points were legitimate and I believe that Network Rail will take their views on board and try to take any necessary action.” - more - Liaison – 2 Cllr Yeulett continued, “Seven residents attended and they want to represent the views of their neighbours.  It is a good size for a working group.  I hope Network Rail will however, continue to be proactive with any problems that arise and not wait until this forum to seek solutions.” The next meeting is scheduled for early March 2004.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
