Coaches replace East Midlands trains south of Luton on June weekend

Region & Route:
| Southern

Coaches will replace East Midlands Trains (EMT) services between Luton and London St Pancras International on 20 and 21 June during a weekend of Network Rail engineering work to improve services.

Some Kettering services will also be subject to alteration and cancellation.

Passengers travelling to and from Luton Airport should allow an extra 15 minutes to connect with a Thameslink airport shuttle bus between the airport and Luton.

Steve Hughes, Area Director for Network Rail said: “We are completing many different upgrades to our rail network over the weekend of 20 and 21 June. This will bring real benefits for passengers, both in improving day to day reliability and providing an improved network which can run more and faster services in the future.

“By completing all of these items of work over a single weekend we minimise the impact upon passengers and we have worked hard with operators to make sure that good alternative travel routes are available. I thank passengers for their patience during this essential work.”

The work scheduled for the weekend of 20/21 June includes:

  • Demolition and reconstruction of Robinsons pedestrian bridge to the north of Elstree and Borehamwood station.
  • Bringing into service a new servicing facility for Thameslink trains at Cricklewood
  • Track renewals at Radlett, Harpenden and Derby
  • Renewal of overhead line electrification equipment between Mill Hill and Scratchwood
  • Drainage improvements near Wellingborough
  • Work on new, modern signalling equipment between west Hampstead and Radlett Junction as part of the Thameslink programme

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
