Choose rail this August bank holiday

Region & Route:
Eastern: Anglia

This August bank holiday, much of the railway network across East Anglia will be open for passengers to travel and enjoy exciting destinations across Essex, Suffolk, Cambridge and Norfolk, as well as into the capital.

We’ve worked hard to keep engineering work to a minimum, allowing passengers to make the most of the extended weekend to travel across the region and visit the beautiful places East Anglia has to offer. We just can’t promise good weather.

While the majority of the railway will be open over the bank holiday, there will be routine maintenance work taking place on some routes which is critical to the continued safety, reliability and resilience of the network, while also supporting long-term performance.

On Sunday 24 August, Greater Anglia train services will not operate between Meridian Water and Stratford. Between 08:00 and 18:00, services that normally operate between Hertford East and Stratford will be diverted to operate between Hertford East and Liverpool Street. Passengers travelling to / from Stratford can use Greater Anglia main line services between Liverpool Street and Stratford.

A limited amount of engineering work is also taking place on the Tilbury and Shoeburyness branch that will affect some late-night c2c Railway services across the bank holiday weekend. Passengers needing to travel on late-night services are encouraged to check before travelling at nationalrail.co.uk and to leave extra time if their journey is affected.

Katie Frost, Anglia route director for Network Rail said: “The vast majority of passengers will be able to travel on our network across East Anglia, to visit friends, family, tourist spots or simply going to work.

“We’ve some limited engineering work happening, but I do hope people will choose rail and take advantage of our network being mostly open this bank holiday.”

Notes to Editors

Passengers travelling on c2c Railway services and Greater Anglia’s Southend Victoria / Southminster line should keep checking before they travel during the late summer and autumn. Extra late night engineering work and speed restrictions mean that there are slight amendments to the timetable. This is following the driest spring in 50 years, which has caused the track to drop and become uneven in places. Find out more: c2c Railway / Greater Anglia

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
