Check before you travel as heavy rain expected in southwest Scotland

Region & Route:
Scotland’s Railway: Scotland

Rail passengers are being advised to check their journeys as speed restrictions are put in place due to extreme weather in Scotland.

Bands of heavy rain will move into the southwest of the country this evening (Friday 8 December) before turning more persistent on Saturday, with between 30-80mm expected to fall.

Speed restrictions will be put in place to help keep people safe on two sections of the route between Carlisle and Glasgow Central via Dumfries from 22:00 on Friday until 09:00 on Sunday.

This will be on two, three-mile stretches between Thornhill – Sanquhar and Auchinleck - Kilmarnock.

The integrated control room, including its specialist weather forecasters will be working alongside engineers to monitor the situation and keep trains moving.

Liam Sumpter, route director, Network Rail Scotland, said: “Speed restrictions between Carlisle and Glasgowvia Dumfries will mean journey times are slightly longer than normal this weekend.

“Our specialist weather forecasters will be monitoring conditions throughout the weekend, while our engineers are on standby to respond to any problems which occur.

“Passengers should check their journey before travelling at National Rail Enquiries or with their train operator.”

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
