Central station photo exhibition puts Scotland in the shop window

Region & Route:
Scotland’s Railway: Scotland

Passengers at Glasgow Central are getting a chance to see Scotland’s stunning scenery without even leaving the concourse thanks to a unique new photography exhibition.

Scotland’s busiest station has converted the windows of three of its retail units into a temporary photo gallery to promote Take-a-view, the UK’s national landscape photography competition.

For the next seven weeks the units, which are closed for refurbishment, will be used to display some of the best images of Scotland from previous years of the Network Rail-sponsored competition.

Taken by photographers from around the UK, among the images featured are shots of the Tay rail bridge, Rua Reidh lighthouse (Gairloch), Eilean Donan Castle (Kyle of Lochalsh), Loch Dochard, Loch Lomond and the Isle of Eigg.

David Biggs, director of property for Network Rail, said: “Glasgow Central station is used by over 100,000 passengers a day and this is a unique opportunity to showcase Scotland to them. During our refurbishment work, passengers will now be greeted with stunning shots from around Scotland rather than plain hoardings or blank windows. This exhibition is a more creative use of our space and it reinforces our desire to make our stations destinations for people to enjoy rather than just departure or arrival points.”

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
