Cambuslang Road to close for vital bridge refurbishment

Region & Route:
Scotland’s Railway: Scotland

Cambuslang Road in Rutherglen will close for 14 weeks from February 20 while Network Rail engineers carry out work to repair and strengthen the railway bridge over the A724.

The refurbishment of the bridge is part of a wider, rolling programme of maintenance work on our structures which is designed to extend their lifespan and keep our network safe and reliable.

Work on the bridge, near the M74 exit, includes strengthening the main girders and concrete bridge deck, blast cleaning and repairing the metalwork, applying corrosion protection to steelwork, painting the entire bridge, repairing masonry and clearing adjacent vegetation.

To deliver this work safely, the road needs to close to vehicles as it is too narrow to allow even single lane traffic.  Pedestrian and cycle access will be maintained throughout the road closure.

Billy McKay, Network Rail programme manager, said: “We know that the A724 is an important access point to the M74 as well as a route for local traffic and we do not take the decision to request its closure lightly.

“We understand the impact that this potentially will have for both road users and those communities adjacent to the proposed diversion route. However, this is the most efficient and safest way to undertake the work required on the bridge.

“Delivering this work, which is part of our UK-wide railway upgrade plan, in just 14 weeks is a logistical challenge but we have planned the job carefully with our contractors and will complete it with the minimum possible inconvenience to the local community.”

Network Rail has worked with South Lanarkshire Council to put in place an appropriate ‘all vehicle’ diversion and all local access has been retained either side of the bridge to industrial units.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
