Broughty Ferry platform works get underway

Region & Route:
Scotland’s Railway: Scotland

Network Rail engineers will start work on enhancing platform one at Broughty Ferry station this Monday (January 8).

During the project, a 90m section of platform will be raised and rebuilt as part of a programme of improvements along the East Coast main line.

The platform works will allow new train fleets to be introduced on the route and also deliver benefits for local passengers by improving the stepping distance from trains calling at the station.

Simon Humble, Network Rail’s scheme project manager, said: “This investment is vital to the introduction of a new state-of-the-art train fleet on the East Coast main line and also improves the station for passengers.

“We are committed to delivering this work considerately and our programme is designed to complete these enhancements as quickly as possible while also minimising inconvenience for rail users and local businesses.”

A section of Queen Street car park is being used as a site compound for the work and the number of spaces available will be reduced while the project is completed.

There will also be a road closure in place each Saturday night from January 21 until April 28 between Gray Street and Brook Street junction from 21:00 on the Saturday until 09:00 on Sunday.

The project is one of 10 being delivered across the Highland and East Coast main lines in Scotland as part of a Department for Transport-funded upgrade to enable the introduction of Virgin East Coast’s new Azuma trains.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
