Bridge replacement work back on track for Glasgow Road, Carmuirs

Region & Route:
Scotland’s Railway: Scotland

Work is set to resume at Glasgow Road, Carmuirs to replace the railway bridge over the A803 between Camelon and Bonnybridge.  The project, originally scheduled for autumn last year was postponed as the team could not get sufficient ‘access time’ to the railway line to complete the job

Work on the bridge is to replace the deck and parapets and can only be done safely and efficiently while the road below is closed to traffic.  When complete the bridge will be more robust and will have improved resilience in the event of a vehicle striking the structure.  The work will also prepare the bridge for future projects to upgrade track and electrify the line to deliver improved reliability and faster line speeds for rail services.

Activity gets underway from Saturday 1st April and is scheduled to complete Sunday 30th April.  Glasgow Road will close to traffic Saturday 8th April until Friday 21st April to enable work. A signposted diversion route will be in place via Stirling Road and the B905 Denny Road.

Throughout the project there will be day shift working Monday to Friday 7.30 am to 6pm with Saturday night shifts 10pm to 10am on the 1st, 8th, 22nd and 29 April.  Work over the Easter Weekend will be continuous 24hr working from 8pm on Friday 14th until 8am on Monday 17th April as we take advantage of quieter traffic over the holiday weekend to maximise the amount of work we can deliver with the least disruption to both road users and rail passengers.

Alison Flanagan, Network Rail project manager for the work said, “The heavy plant and machinery that will be used during the work means that it will be noisy and some disturbance is unavoidable, particularly at night.  We appreciate that it is also a busy road and the extended journey times created by the diversion route will cause some inconvenience.  We apologise if you are effected by either noise from the work or the road closure”.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
