BOB NEILL MP VIEWS PROGRESS ON BROMLEY

Region & Route:
| Southern

Bromley and Chislehurst MP Bob Neill has visited Bromley South station to see the progress on the on the multi-million pound investment project to improve access and facilities.

Once complete, passengers will be able to take advantage of step-free access from the station entrance to the platforms and a re-vamped station entrance and ticket hall. These improvements will make the railway easier to use for everyone, provide better facilities and reduce congestion at the busiest times of the day.

Bob Neill MP, who ran a campaign calling for step-free access, said: “The construction team has made incredible progress on the station’s upgrades and this visit has reassured me that the works are well on schedule for completion by the summer. The long wait for step free access is almost over and passengers will soon benefit from some excellent new station features which will make a noticeable difference to their journeys to and from Bromley’s busiest transport hub.”

Dave Hignett, commercial scheme sponsor, Network Rail, said: “Passengers will have noticed the station evolving around them and will be pleased to know all work is progressing as planned. In a few months time, people and businesses in Bromley will get a welcome boost from the much-improved station, easier journeys and a better overall travelling experience.

Funded through the governments, Access for All programme and national station improvement programme, the improvements include:

- two new lifts from the ticket office to all platforms

- improvements to the existing staircases, including new handrails and anti-slip tread.

- more space in the ticket hall and a more contemporary station frontage

- refurbished passenger toilets

- enhanced passenger information and waiting facilities

Vince Lucas, service delivery director, Southeastern, added: “We are pleased to see the improvement works at the station are progressing nicely, there has been a great deal of coordination involved behind the scenes to keep disruption to a minimum. We look forward to being able to offer our passengers step-free access as well as new and improved facilities.”

The project is on schedule for completion in summer 2012.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
