New, bigger car park opens at Market Harborough station

Region & Route:
Eastern

Network Rail and East Midlands Railway opened the extended car park at Market Harborough station yesterday (Sunday, 15 December).

Over the last year, Market Harborough station has been transformed as part of the Midland Main Line Upgrade and the completion of the car park is a major milestone towards the final completion of the project next year.

Network Rail is continuing work to extend platform 2, which will allow longer trains with more seats to call there and, in 2020, there will be further improvements to customer toilets and the waiting room on platform 1. A secure cycle hub will also be added.

Before the upgrade, there were 300 car parking spaces at the station while the extension has provided an additional 200 spaces. These extra spaces will mean more station users can park there, making travelling to and from the station much easier.

The work to the car park is part of a much wider project which Network Rail has carried out at the station. This includes work to straighten the track through the station, enabling trains to travel through the area at higher speeds.

Work has also taken place to improve passenger experience at the station, including the construction of a new, footbridge and lifts, making both platforms fully accessible and opening up travel opportunities for more passengers.

Gavin Crook, Principal Programme Sponsor for Network Rail, said: “The opening of this car park will see the number of spaces available for passengers vastly increase, making travelling to and from the station much easier.

“A vast amount of work has taken place at Market Harborough station, which is providing real benefits. We’d like to thank station users for their patience whilst this work took place.”

Neil Grabham, Customer Service Director for East Midlands Railway, said: “We have been working alongside Network Rail to deliver a vastly improved Market Harborough station and we are really pleased that the new larger customer car park is now open.

“The additional 200 car park spaces will greatly benefit our passengers that travel to and from the station and we would like to thank our passengers for their patience whilst the improvement works have been taking place”.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
