BATTERSEA PARK STATION ON TRACK FOR MAJOR MAKEOVER

Region & Route:
| Southern
Residents and rail commuters are set to benefit from a multi-million pound overhaul of Battersea Park station following an agreement between owner Network Rail and Parkview International, which is developing Battersea Power Station. The £26 million two-year rebuilding programme, funded by Parkview, will transform the station into a vibrant 21st century transport hub. The plans include:
  • Refurbishing the listed front and existing station building
  • Constructing a new station concourse within the viaduct arches and providing new and improved shelter on platforms
  • Providing escalators and lifts to make the station fully accessible and compliant with disability legislation
  • Providing new entrances to the station from Queens Circus and Prince of Wales drive
  • Installing CCTV across the whole station complex
  • Creating accommodation for at least 20 retail and food outlets
John Pike, Network Rail’s Director of Commercial Property, said: “This major upgrade of station facilities will increase the enjoyment of passengers enormously. It is a clear example of how our newly-announced programme of exploring development opportunities to fund station enhancements can work to benefit local people.” Cynthia Grant, Parkview’s Transport Director, said: “Battersea Park railway station is a key part of our transport plans for the Power Station. It is just a four minute walk from our site, offers a frequency of train service that is almost equivalent to the tube and will be the major conduit for visitors to the Power Station.  Parkview’s plans are to create a 21st century interchange and make it one of London’s most attractive, efficient, clean, comfortable and safe railway stations.” The next phase of the design development is underway and work is about to start on surveying the existing fabric and buildings with construction planned to commence at the end of the year.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
