Anglia Route Rail Services Disruption: Joint Statement From Network Rail and Greater Anglia - 13 December 2019

Region & Route:
Eastern: Anglia

Mark Budden, Network Rail Anglia Route Director and Jamie Burles, Greater Anglia Managing Director

“We are very sorry for the disruption customers on our rural routes have experienced this week. We know how frustrating poor service is and we’re working hard to restore them.  Today we have been able to put in more services and from Monday we aim to restore a full service on all routes except Norwich to Sheringham and Ipswich to Peterborough.*

“We are running a series of rigorous tests to identify the root cause of the problems, including examining the impact of leaf contamination, the level crossing mechanisms and how trains’ wheels connect with the track signalling system.

“We’re very sorry for letting our passengers down and promise them we are determined to restore the good service they deserve as quickly as we can.”

Notes to Editors

*On the Norwich to Sheringham line, the plan is for the normal service frequency but still with a bus shuttle between Cromer and Sheringham, due to ongoing speed restrictions.

Some services on the Ipswich to Peterborough services may be subject to cancellation due to the wider impact of speed restrictions on train operations. Customers can travel via Cambridge or Norwich and tickets will be valid on East Midlands and Cross Country services.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
