Alfreton station Access for All update

Region & Route:
Eastern

Network Rail is pleased to report that plans to make the station accessible are moving forward with a completion date scheduled for the first half of 2024.

Most of the railway was designed during the Victorian era, but today there is a better understanding of how to provide wider access and inclusion for everyone. The Department for Transport's Access for All programme, is bringing step-free, accessible routes at hundreds of stations across Britain.

In Alfreton station, two new lifts will be installed on the current bridge which will be refurbished. Platform and lighting improvements will be carried out as part of this project.

Progress made to date includes a coal mining report and bridge inspection. Topographical, lighting, cable, ecological and drainage surveys have also been completed.

Gavin Crook, Principal Programme Sponsor, said:

"We're moving forward with this project and are encouraged by the bridge inspection and assessment report which shows that the existing bridge can be used as proposed.

"Contractors have been engaged to develop final design and the option chosen will deliver value-for-money and a short construction time."

Construction work will start in autumn 2023 and is planned to be completed by spring/early summer 2024.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
