Network Rail will deliver the next stage of the Abergavenny Station footbridge refurbishment scheme from Monday 3 December 2018.

This phase of the project will see engineers remove the existing bridge deck, which will be repaired and refurbished at a specialist workshop in Cardiff.  Engineers will also carry out essential repairs to the bridge’s support columns and staircases, which will remain in situ at the station.

The work is expected to be completed by Spring 2019 when the bridge deck will be lifted back into place. During the work, a temporary footbridge will be installed for passengers to access both station platforms.

Chris Wildy, works delivery manager for Network Rail Wales and Borders, said: “The refurbishment of Abergavenny Station footbridge is essential for passengers using the station, as it has reached the end of its serviceable life.

“We have been working closely with Monmouthshire County Council on our plans, which will see the historic structure refreshed for the benefit of passengers and the local community.

“We thank the local residents and stations users in advance for their patience as we deliver this essential work.”

The contractor delivering this work on behalf of Network Rail recently refurbished footbridges at Llanfair PG and Penmaenmawr on the North Wales Coastline.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
