A mountain of an effort: Network Rail colleagues complete mountain climb and raise over £2,000 for housing charity Shelter

A team from Network Rail’s Wessex route works delivery unit recently completed the challenge of climbing Mount Snowdon to raise vital funds for Shelter.

On Thursday 12 October, the leadership team from Network Rail’s Wessex route works delivery unit took on the challenge of climbing Mount Snowdon - the highest peak in Wales at around 3,560ft - to raise money for housing charity Shelter.

Shelter is just one of the charities that supports Network Rail’s “Routes out of Homelessness” campaign which aims to give hope to homeless people, by offering support to the charities that work so hard to provide vulnerable people with a better future.

The team were fortunate enough to pick a day with a lot of sunshine, setting out at 07.00 to avoid the crowds and reaching the peak before mid-day followed by a more leisurely stroll back down the mountain.

Patrick Gallagher, Network Rail's programme director, who led this effort, said: "This was great on so many fronts, in that we were raising funds for charity, it was great for the team, taking time away from the day job, and having a positive impact on our mental health and wellbeing.

“The climb was more challenging than we expected, but all of the team reached the top and I am incredibly proud of them in taking on this challenge and raising funds. The next event is in the early planning stages.”
