A BRIGHT FUTURE FOR PASSENGERS AT CLAPHAM JUNCTION

Region & Route:
| Southern: Wessex
| Southern
The 10million rail passengers who use Clapham Junction each year are set to benefit from brighter lights and a safer station environment thanks to £1m of investment from Network Rail. The busy station, which is managed by South West Trains, is being treated to a complete overhaul of all its lighting, some of which dates back to the 1980s. Network Rail route director David Pape said: “We know that passengers feel safer in well-lit stations so we’re taking this opportunity to improve all lighting at Clapham Junction, not just that which needs replacing. Work has already begun on platforms 7-17 with platforms 1-6 due for completion by March 2007 and 16 electricians will work in the small hours so that there will be no disruption for passengers. “ Clapham Junction Group Station Manager Jim O’Brien said: “Already the feedback from our customers has been very positive so we look forward to a seeing the whole station lit up in all its glory early next year.”

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
