500+ JOB HOPEFULS SEEK RAIL CAREER

Region & Route:
National

Project managers and engineers working on some of Britain's biggest and most exciting infrastructure projects helped Network Rail’s recruitment team speak to more than 500 people at the National Engineering and Construction Exhibition at the NEC, Birmingham last weekend (23rd and 24th April). They provided valuable, first-hand knowledge and experience to those seeking an exciting and challenging career.

As part of Network Rail's campaign to attract more talented women to the company, eight of the employees helping to staff the stand were women, who talked about the opportunities for all at the rail infrastructure company and how they have succeeded in what is traditionally seen as a male dominated environment.

Simon Kirby, director of infrastructure projects for Network Rail commented: "With the election looming, it's encouraging that there is political agreement that investment in rail is vital to building a successful economy. In managing over 5,000 projects a year, including some of the biggest infrastructure projects in Europe such as the £600m redevelopment of Birmingham New Street and the £5.5bn Thameslink programme, we can offer project managers and engineers fantastic opportunities to be part of delivering a bigger and better railway for everyone.

“We know it’s still a tough jobs market out there, but we have a number of vacancies in project management and engineering roles to help us deliver these massive changes to the network which will revitalise the railway and help improve passengers’ journeys for years to come."

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
