£1M PLATFORM IMPROVEMENTS FOR PECKHAM RYE
- Region & Route:
- | Southern
Over £1 million is being invested in improved platforms at Peckham Rye station, resulting in safer and easier access for passengers to and from trains.
The improvements, which are taking place over Easter holiday weekend, include the resurfacing of platforms 1 to 4, the installation of Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) compliant tactile paving on all platforms to assist the visually impaired, and the replacement of cracked and broken canopy glazing panels. Additional miscellaneous cleaning and repair works will also be carried out.
Fiona Taylor, Network Rail’s Sussex route director, said: “Peckham Rye station is one of the busiest in South London, providing rail connections to central London and across Sussex and Kent. This is the first phase of a package of enhancements which will create a safer and more pleasant travelling experience for passengers.
"This is a significant project, and the Easter weekend provides a suitable window within which it can be completed. Rail demand on this busy commuter route is significantly less at weekends and on public holidays than during the week, so by carrying out the work over Easter, we can minimise disruption to passengers."
Rail replacement bus services will be operating between London Bridge and London Victoria via Peckham Rye and Denmark Hill, and also between London Bridge and Tulse Hill via Peckham Rye, on Saturday 11th, Sunday 12th and Monday 13th April.
Paul Trevett, Southern’s Facilities Manager said: “Although the station will be closed during the Easter weekend, we are sure that the end result will be well worth the short-term inconvenience that may be caused to our passengers.”
Passengers are advised to check with National Rail Enquiries (www.nationalrail.co.uk or 0845 7 48 49 50) before they travel.
Notes to editors
NOTES TO EDITORS Southeastern is also operating a rail replacement bus service on Sunday 12 April between Herne Hill and Beckenham Junction via Denmark Hill, Peckham Rye, Nunhead, Crofton Park and Catford. This is as a result of rail improvement works taking place between Denmark Hill and Shortlands. Peckham Rye has been identified as one of the 150 medium sized stations in England and Wales to benefit from the ‘National Stations Improvement Programme’ (NSIP), a £150m Department for Transport backed scheme to deliver station improvements. In partnership with the train operator, Southern, Network Rail plans to deliver an improved and more efficient travelling experience at the station for passengers and the local community. The proposed enhancements include: • A new self contained ticket office pod containing two counters, automatic ticket machines and cash machine. • New wall and ceiling surfacing, handrails and slip resistant surfacing to the staircase leading to platform 4; • The removal of existing structures on platform 4, creating more space for passengers • The redecoration of platform 3; • Station facilities will also benefit from enhanced lighting, seating areas and new customer information screens on platforms 1 and 2. The NSIP improvements are subject to third-party funding, which is the subject of ongoing discussion.Contact information

About Network Rail
We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.
Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
