A new island platform, providing two platform faces, will be connected with the existing station by a new footbridge and lifts.

A major refurbishment programme is now underway, which includes structural works, modernisation of the ticket office and waiting areas, provision of a disabled toilet and new staff toilets and the restoration of a number of features such as windows, doors and fire places

The uniquely-designed bridge is 72m long, six metres high and weighs 1,200 tonnes.  It took seven hours to move it into place, travelling at an average of 7mm per second using specialist machinery before being lowered into place, creating a new landmark.
