Volunteers take part in Deepdale’s latest deep clean

Region & Route:

A section of disused railway line in Preston has been tidied and improved thanks to volunteers from Network Rail and other local organisations.

The clean up has helped to improve the environment for local people and wildlife, removing litter and fly-tipped waste from the area.

On Thursday (1 May) staff from Network Rail were joined on the clean up of the disused line near Deepdale Mill Street, Preston, by volunteers from Preston City Council, AMCO, and TES 2000 as well as those taking part in a community pay back scheme through Lancashire Probation.

Sarah McArdle, community relations manager from Network Rail, said: “This community event helps to improve the environment and is supported by our staff and those from other organisations in the local area. Over 30 people volunteered their time to help tidy the area, resulting in a more pleasant environment.

“Fly-tipping and littering are anti-social acts which make the surrounding area unpleasant for people and wildlife. Whenever possible, we will prosecute those who fly-tip and encourage everyone to dispose of their rubbish in the correct and responsible way.”

It was the fifth time volunteers have cleaned up the local area in recent years.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
