TROWELL BRIDGE RECONSTRUCTION – ROAD CLOSURES 21 FEBRUARY – 28 MARCH 2004

Region & Route:

Network Rail is about to start work on a £3m project to reconstruct Trowell Bridge in Nottingham to enable it meet new EU standards to carry 40 tonne vehicles. The project is being part-funded by Nottinghamshire County Council and will see the complete replacement of the three span bridge carrying the A609 Ilkeston Road over the railway. In order to carry out the work the road will be closed to vehicular traffic for five weeks, with pedestrian access maintained by a permanent footbridge, constructed by Network Rail last summer. The road closure will take effect from 06.00 on Saturday 21 February and will re-open on Sunday 28 March with temporary traffic lights in place for a further two weeks. Traffic diversions will be clearly marked and these have been specified by Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire County Councils. The existing bridge will be demolished, allowing work to begin on preparing the existing sub structure. Following on from this, nine large pre-cast sections will be lifted into place by a 1, 000 tonne capacity mobile crane. The bridge deck will then be waterproofed, followed by the kerb laying and surfacing prior to the bridge re-opening to traffic. -more- Trowell - 2 Andy Milne, Bridge Engineer for Network Rail Midlands Region explained “The essential engineering work taking place to reconstruct the bridge plays an important part in Network Rail’s commitment to rebuilding Britain’s railway and is an element of our partnership work with local authorities around the country to strengthen road/rail bridges to meet new EU standards.” Full railway closures between Trowell Junction and Clay Cross will take place over the weekends of 28-29 February and 6-7 March with trains being diverted via Derby and replacement buses being provided where necessary. About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
