TRACK SAFETY BRINGS ITS OWN REWARD IN HULL

Region & Route:
Jayne Beadle from Cottingham in Humberside found that warning her children of the dangers of misusing railway lines reaped rewards after winning a safety competition run by Network Rail at the 'Cab-it' weekend at the National Railway Museum. The museum opened a number of train cabs in the museum to visitors and organised a range of visiting diesel locomotives on 17 and 18 March. Network Rail's No Messin'! team were there, giving the safety message to under 18s and there was also information about Network Rail's "Don't Run the Risk" campaign which highlights the dangers of level crossing misuse. Jayne, who lives close to a level crossing in Cottingham, won four first class passes for First TransPennine Express and other goodies after winning the competition. "I'm delighted - I never win anything," said Jayne. "My daughter knew the answer to the question about what the lights on a level crossing mean. We're all aware of the need to be safe around the tracks because we live so close to the lines." Neil Henry, Area General Manager for Network Rail presented Jayne with her prize. He said: "Track safety is a high priority. We know that railway lines are attractive to young people who feel they have nowhere else to go. The No Messin'! campaign aims to introduce them to healthy and interesting activities which will keep them away from the tracks. "Through events like these, and our railway crime education work, we hope to remind people that the railway is safe - as long as it's not abused."

Notes to editors

No Messin' Live! - a nationwide series of free two-day events packed full of free activities for 10- to 16-year olds - will be running again this summer with events on 7/8 August at the Concord centre in Sheffield and 20/21 August at the Acorn centre in Middlesbrough. The events are part of Network Rail's national campaign to reduce death and injury on the railway by getting young people off the tracks and doing something better instead. About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
