TONGE VIADUCT REPAIRS COMPLETED

Region & Route:
A scheme to carry out essential repairs to a Bolton viaduct has been completed by Network Rail on time and on budget. Tongue viaduct, which is situated on the Bolton to Blackburn line close to Bolton station, was constructed in 1849. The scheme, which has cost £300,000, started on January, 13 and was completed this week. During the scheme Network Rail undertook brickwork and handrail repairs to the structure. The key element of the work was replacing the weathered, damaged and missing brickwork to ensure the viaduct is structurally sound. Part of the scheme required removing vegetation growing from the brick joints on the viaduct face to reduce the risk of root damage in the future. Traditionally undertaking brickwork repairs to a viaduct of this size would have involved the use of extensive scaffolding but for this project a specialist company was appointed and this allowed the majority of repairs to be carried out by abseilers and from suspended cradles. In addition the viaduct handrail, which is situated at railway level, was strengthened or replaced. This will provide a safer working environment for railway staff.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
