Tonbridge – Redhill landslip: Godstone landslip 1

Sunday 22 Dec 2019

Tonbridge – Redhill landslip

The line between Tonbridge and Redhill is currently closed in both directions after a landslip this afternoon (Sunday 22 December). An hourly bus replacement service is running in place of trains today and this will also apply to Monday 23rd, Tuesday 24th and Friday 27th December.

Fiona Taylor, Route Director for Kent said "A significant earthworks failure near Godstone, affecting the Tonbridge to Redhill line, means that in the interest of safety we have had to take the difficult decision to close the line in both directions for the foreseeable future. A team of specialist engineers has been on-site since midday assessing the situation and drawing up plans to fix the problem.

“The significant amount of rainfall over the last five days has had a huge impact on the railway and this was the case here on the line near Godstone. I am extremely sorry for the disruption this will cause to passengers over the festive period and we will issue a further update just as soon as we’ve finalised plans for fixing the landslip, so that passengers are able to plan ahead.”

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
