TIPTON STATION CLOSES FOR £2.5M UPGRADE

Passengers are set to benefit from a £2.5m facelift of Tipton station

Almost £2.5m is to be invested in the station that will have its platforms completely replaced making it easier for passengers to get on and off trains, a new weather-proof waiting area will be added and new fencing put in.

Jo Kaye, Network Rail route director said: "Passengers will enjoy a whole new look to Tipton station following its multi-million pound facelift. The station will be safer, easier to access and provide a better passenger experience.”

Benefits to passengers include:

· Aesthetically enhanced station facilities

· Better and quicker routes to the station from the car park and under-pass

· Step free access onto the platforms

· Easier access for passengers getting on and off trains as the stepping distance will be significantly reduced

· Safer station with anti-slip surfaces added

Tipton Station will be closed throughout this essential work from Monday 14 September 2009 through to April 2010.

London Midland will be providing bus replacement services between Tipton and Coseley, throughout the project as train services will not be able to call at Tipton.

Notes to editors

· Platforms 1 and 2 at Tipton station were built around 90 years ago and are now at the end of their useful life and need to be demolished and completely replaced

· New low maintenance materials will be used in the construction of the new platforms helping to minimise any potential future disruption

· The waiting shelter on platform 1 will be replaced by a brand new steel and glass construction
