THE WRITING'S OFF THE WALL

Region & Route:

Network Rail has its paintbrushes at the ready to remove graffiti in the underpass at Grantham station on the 14 and 15 July.

The tunnel which connects Huntingtower Road and Station Road has been covered in graffiti and tags which have upset residents. The Blyth Group has been contracted to undertake the removal of the graffiti and paint the underpass.

Terry Hawkins, railway crime education manager said:

“We take a very tough line on graffiti – it is a very serious offence. Not only is it anti-social, it costs the railway industry millions of pounds every year, money we’d rather spend improving the railway.

“Graffiti is not harmless fun; it's a serious blight on the environment. In many cases unpleasant for passengers and people to look at. Our maintenance crews fight a constant battle to remove graffiti and hope that this site will remain graffiti free.”

The underpass will be closed from 08.00 on 14 July to 16.00 on 15 July. Notices will be places at each end a week prior to the start of the work to notify the general public.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
