Region & Route:
Wales & Western: Wales & Borders

A steam locomotive will be heading to the Conwy Valley line this Saturday 3 August.

To celebrate the reopening of the Conwy Valley line, Network Rail and Transport for Wales Rail Services are hosting a special steam train trip.

The line, which was closed in March due to extensive flooding, fully reopened to the public last week.

The train, hauled by double headed steam locos (48151 and 45690), will run from Chester to Blaenau Ffestiniog, also stopping at Llandudno Junction on the way.

Bill Kelly, route director, Network Rail Wales and Borders, said: “After months of hard work to repair the flood-damaged Conwy Valley line, we are delighted to have reopened it in time for the National Eisteddfod and to be celebrating with a special steam train trip for passengers to discover and explore the beauty of this line.”

Colin Lea, customer experience director for Transport for Wales Rail Services said: “This is a rare opportunity to travel by steam through some of the best scenery in the UK, celebrating the return of the Conwy Valley line – it will be a trip to remember.”

Cllr Philip C Evans, chair of the Conwy Valley Railway Partnership, said: “It is wonderful news that Network Rail are marking the reopening of the line in such a special way which will also mark the beginning of the Eisteddfod in Llanrwst.”

Return tickets are available to buy for only £75 return. To book tickets call 0844 856 0688 (opening times Mon - Fri 0830-1630).

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
