Stations turn blue as NHS turns 72

Birmingham New Street, Liverpool Lime Street, Manchester Piccadilly and Euston stations will all turn blue this Saturday (4 July) to celebrate 72 years since the founding of the NHS.

The four major transport hubs in Network Rail’s North West and Central region will join numerous other railway landmarks and buildings across the country to #LightUpBlue – by changing their station lighting or digital displays to blue – the colour of the National Health Service.

On Sunday 5 July at 5pm, station staff will also take part in a national one-off clap to pay tribute to all care professionals who have helped to save lives during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Tim Shoveller, managing director for Network Rail’s North West and Central region, said: “Once again it’ll be a privilege to join the rest of the railway industry to, quite literally, shine a light on the herculean effort being made by thousands of healthcare professionals working to save lives every day at this time of national crisis.

“We will continue to show how proud we are of the NHS and help in any way we can during the ongoing fight against the spread of Covid-19.”

At Euston the station frontage will be lit up by blue floodlighting.

At Birmingham New Street messages will be played on the media eye displays at the three station entrances.

After being red all week to celebrate Liverpool FC being crowned Premier League champions, Liverpool Lime Street station will become blue in honour of the NHS.

And at Manchester Piccadilly, its screens will display a special thank you message to mark the National Health Service’s 72 year anniversary.
